Ambassador Antoine of Grenada- "take ownership of the future.
At the UN General Assembly in New York City on March 28, 2015 Ambassador Antoine of Grenada urged the Montessori Model United Nations delegates to "take ownership of the future."
He stated that, "sustainable development of all societies depends on what is done in your schools, churches, communities, countries. Local well being also depends on what happens in the world at large. This is the real general assembly of the future. Visualize yourself taking an action today that will change your world because what happens here will be repeated in reality. Those among you who will be in the secretariats, you will change your world. The future parents and authorities of more than 60 countries represented. You can change this world, but you must take ownership of the future today. You can contribute now, not from the vision of your parents but of you, the placeholders of the future. Maria Montessori said, 'it is the child who makes the person and no person exists who is not made by the child he once was.' The land is where all roots are. Children must be taught to live in harmony. The UN declared 2015 the international year of the soil. Soil is the most precious natural resource around the world. There are also Millenium goals. You have many issues to deal with. Therefore the UN is engaged in preparing an agenda for post 2015 and you are going to be the implementers as the stakeholders. There are 17 goals you must learn about, sustainable development goals and targets. Poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, employment... It is not enough to educate in order to attain happiness. Happiess is as important as education. Happiness is a sense of community and purpose. Remember this great lady, Maria Montessori, a woman of vision who helped produce some of the most successful and creative people in the world. She confronted prejudice, even though she was born so long ago. She became the first female doctor in Europe. Learning about her has taught you to think creatively. Today we discuss these social issues as Montessorians. The world needs your creativity. Your innovative skills and talents to solve the world's problems. I'm inviting you to take ownership of the future now."
