Common Core
AMI is very pleased to provide the linked copies of the completed mapping of a representative AMI elementary curriculum to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math, geometry, reading, writing, language arts, speaking, and listening. This work is the product of a large team of AMI-trained elementary teachers, consultants, trainers, and administrators who have generously volunteered their time and skills over the last 18 months.
Math & Geometry
Language Arts & Literacy
In these documents you will find, for each Common Core standard, a list of AMI elementary lessons and activities that pertain to it, along with an assessment of whether the Common Core standard is completely or partially covered. As you would expect, AMI's Cosmic Education not only covers the vast majority of the Common Core standards, but goes considerably beyond them in both scope and depth.
In cases where a Common Core standard is not completely covered by Cosmic Education, AMI-trained teachers should be able to easily supplement where necessary, without bringing into the classroom non-Montessori programs, methods, or instructional materials currently being marketed as "Common Core compliant." This is consistent with the longstanding understanding in AMI elementary that the albums provide a solid, common foundation for elementary pedagogy, and that other topics and activities can be introduced according to the requirements of the local public school curriculum in a way consistent with the philosophy and tone of Cosmic Education.
The practitioners' forums provided by AMI-EAA will continue to be one place where classroom teachers can find support in developing pedagogically sound extensions of this sort. The white paper by senior AMI elementary trainer Phyllis Pottish-Lewis expands on this and other implementation themes.
A new CCSS page on the AMI/USA website provides up-to-date information about the Common Core and our mapping, including links for people to submit questions and feedback to the Implementation Support Team. AMI will continue to provide periodic updates and answers to Frequently Asked Questions to those who indicate an interest in receiving them. You can indicate such an interest on the new CCSS page.
